The analysis "Practical Problems in Implementation of the Appropriate Assessment of Natura 2000" by JE provides that there are cases in EU member countries where appropriate assessment is skipped, baseline data is unreliable and scientific doubts are brushed aside at the cost of our well-being. The study reveals a range of serious practical problems in EU member states regarding the implementation of appropriate assessments (AA) for the purpose of protection of Natura 2000 sites.
The study highlights the need for establishing guarantees into the national provisions ensuring that the AA study is conducted by independent experts of relevant qualification and expertise, AA in SEA procedures, raising awareness of national decision-makers on the European Court of Justice case law on AA and strengthening quality control of the assessment studies.
